Watercolor & Colored Pencil Mixed Media Art
This course is designed for children and teens ages 9 and up who are interested in drawing, color, and creative expression. Students will learn how to combine watercolor and colored pencils to create artwork with both soft color effects and fine details. Students will learn how to observe shapes, colors, light, shadows, and details, and transform those observations into more complete and expressive works of art. Watercolor helps students explore transparency, washes, gradients, and atmosphere, while colored pencils help them develop layering, texture, detail, and a polished finish. Through engaging subjects such as flowers, plants, fruits, animals, desserts, landscapes, and creative illustrations, students will gradually build stronger observation skills, color sense, hand control, and artistic confidence.

Course Highlights
This is not simply a colored pencil class or a traditional watercolor class. It is a more complete and expressive mixed media art course. Students will learn watercolor washes, wet-on-wet effects, colored pencil layering, gradients, color blending, light and shadow, texture, and basic composition. The course combines clear step-by-step demonstrations with creative themed projects, helping students develop solid art skills while also discovering their own artistic expression.

Instructor Bio
This course is taught by Nora Xu. Personal Website: Nora-xu.com Ms. Xu has a strong background in art and design, with a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design and a Master’s degree in Digital Media Arts. She has many years of experience teaching art at the university level. In recent years, she has also been actively involved in children’s art education, painting, creative art projects, and curatorial work. Her artwork has received awards and has been exhibited in multiple locations across the United States. Ms. Xu works with a wide range of artistic media, including oil painting, acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, and digital art. Her teaching style is clear, patient, and encouraging. She is skilled at breaking down art techniques into simple, age-appropriate steps, helping students improve their skills, build confidence, and discover the joy of creating art in a relaxed and supportive classroom environment.
