Class Description:

This is a beginner class. If necessary, students will learn how to assemble the instrument and create sound, first with the headjoint part of the flute. Then, we will cover notes/scales and play some beginner level pieces. More advanced students will have a focus on creating a clear sound and a range of high and low notes. The students will learn how to listen and play well with other flute players.

Teacher Description:

Instructors: Julia Xiao, Sean Shang

Julia Xiao is a rising junior at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. She began playing flute in 4th grade and has participated in elementary, middle school, and high school bands since then. Julia is a lover of music. Her other musical explorations include playing euphonium/baritone during marching band season, being in jazz band for two years with the flute, and learning some piano and saxophone. In addition, Julia has taught elementary students online in her volunteer program, Kids Teaching Kids, for two years, so she has experience working with young students. She can't wait to meet and teach your kids!

Sean Shang is a rising senior at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School and will be the flute section leader in the ABRHS band this year. He began playing flute in 5th grade and has played in the school band since. He successfully auditioned for and participated in the MMEA Eastern Junior District, MMEA All-State, and John Philip Sousa National Honor Bands. In addition to band, Sean has experience playing flute in the Indian Hill Sinfonia Concert Orchestra. He has earned a MICCA Solo Gold Medal for flute. His other musical endeavors include playing piano for 11 years. Sean is excited to bring his love of music to young students!
